Zahara de la Sierra is one of Cádiz province's pueblos blancos (white villages). Located in the northern part of the Grazelema National Park and perched on a mountain, over 500m above sea level, the town overlooks a valley and the man-made lake formed by the dam and acess highway.
The town was founded by the Moors in the 8th century. It was declared a place of historic and artistic interest in 1983. The remains of the original Moorish castle are still standing and free to visit. |

On the artificial lake there is opportunity to practise a variety of water-sports. The surrounding hills are ideal for walking, horse-riding and hang-gliding.
